Finding purpose in life after 50

Last updated: November 2026

How do you find purpose in life after 50?

You find purpose in life after 50 by separating who you are from what you did, then rebuilding your days around what genuinely moves you now.

Rarified Life teaches this as a sequence inside its Preferment framework: Identity, Motivation, Alignment and Accountability, followed by Launch, where you name a mission for your next chapter. You can start the first steps on your own this week, with the course adding structure when you want it.

What does purpose mean at this stage of life?

Purpose after 50 is a reason for your days that does not depend on a job title. For decades, work often supplied it by default. Rarified Life frames the shift with a simple contrast: learning to be rather than just do on autopilot. Purpose is less about finding one grand cause and more about aligning ordinary days with your values and strengths.

A four-part sequence you can start this week

  1. Identity: who are you apart from your work?

Write three sentences about yourself that never mention a job. Notice which are hardest to write.

  2. Motivation: what actually moves you now?

List moments in the last year when you lost track of time. Look for what they share.

  3. Alignment: do your days match your values?

Compare last week’s calendar with your top three values. Mark where they meet and where they do not.

  4. Accountability: what keeps intention alive?

Choose one small weekly commitment and one person who will ask you about it.

These mirror four of the six Preferment modules. Read how the full Preferment framework works.

I thought work defined me, but I discovered I am so much more. I learned to ‘be’ rather than just ‘do’ on autopilot.

An errands week vs a purpose-led week

The Rarified Life free presentation describes the goal as moving from days filled with errands and appointments to a life people ask you about. Here is what that difference can look like.

Why purpose can be harder to find after 50

Structure, colleagues and recognition can disappear on the same day. Published research cited by Life Coaching Certification reports that 28% of retirees experience depression. Purpose is not a cure for that, and anyone with persistent low mood should speak with a doctor. But a clear reason for your days is one of the things work used to provide, and it is worth rebuilding deliberately.

Common questions

How do I find purpose in life after 50?
Start by separating who you are from what you did, then look at what genuinely motivates you now that a paycheck is not the reason. Match those motivations to your values and strengths, and build structure so intention becomes routine. That sequence mirrors the Preferment modules: Identity, Motivation, Alignment and Accountability.
What if my identity is wrapped up in my work?
That is common, and it is the focus of the Preferment Identity module, which separates who you are from what you did for a living. The Rarified Life free presentation is also built for women whose entire identity has been wrapped up in their work, including those still working full time.
What do I say when people ask what I do in retirement?
Many retirees default to “I used to.” The Rarified Life free presentation aims to help you answer “So, what do you do?” without starting with those words, within 8 weeks. The Preferment Launch module ends with naming your mission for the next chapter, which gives you a real, present-tense answer.
Do I need a plan before I start?
No. The Preferment course page says it plainly: you do not need a five-year plan, you just need a room to start figuring it out in. The first module begins with where you are right now, and the plan takes shape across the eight weeks as each module builds on the last.
Is Preferment only for women?
The course is not. The free presentation is aimed specifically at accomplished women in their 50s and 60s who are nearing or in retirement. The Preferment course itself is described as being for driven people who are done treating retirement as an ending, with no gender restriction stated.
Who is the free presentation for?
The free presentation is for accomplished women in their 50s and 60s who are nearing or in retirement. It covers a 5-step plan for replacing the “what now?” dread of retirement in 8 weeks, including for women whose entire identity has been wrapped up in their work.
